How to avoid the message "(Error) Misconfigured Wingate or Proxy server" when
connecting to the Undernet's IRC servers ?
Question:
I am using IRC client behind Proxy+. When I connect to the Undernet server I can see "(Error)
Misconfigured Wingate or Proxy server" message.
Answer:
Undernet servers check whether your system allows the connections from the
Internet (if it is unsecured). When server detects that it is possible to connect to the
port number 23 (telnet) or 1080 (SOCKS server) on your system it sends the error message
mentioned above.
You can easily secure your Proxy+ using security options.
Example:
We want to allow access to the Proxy+ only for local (LAN) clients. All local stations use IP addresses
from range 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.255 and PC with Proxy+ is connected to the LAN by netcard with IP address 192.168.0.1.
There are two ways how to configure Proxy+ : Enabled clients or Secure Interfaces method.
Enabled clients:
We will create a list of enabled IP addresses. Proxy+ allows the processing of requests from listed IP addresses.
1) Go to the "Security\General" WWW
admin page.
Enable the "Use secure IP addresses" option and press the Save
button.
Note: You can enable the "Log security violations" (all attempts to connect from forbidden IP addresses will be logged) or "Immediate abort of unsecure connections" (as default Proxy+ sends "Access denied" message to the client - if it is possible) too.
2) Go to the "Security\Clients" WWW
admin page.
Type "192.168.0.1-192.168.0.255" (without parenthesis) to the "New
client IP:" field and press the Add button.
3) Restart the Proxy+ using "Administrator/Restart" WWW Admin page.
Secure interfaces:
We will specify through which NIC (Network Interface Card) a request can come. Proxy+ allows the requests processing
from listed interfaces. It is an easy way how to enable access for all local clients - you
needn't know all client's IP addresses.
1) Go to the "Security\General" WWW
admin page.
Enable the "Use secure interfaces" option and press the Save
button.
Note:You can enable the "Log security violations"
(all attempts to connect from forbidden interfaces will be logged) or "Immediate
abort of unsecure connections" (by default Proxy+ sends "Access denied" message to the client - if it is
possible) too.
2) Go to the "Security\Interfaces" WWW admin page.
Type "192.168.0.1" (without parenthesis) to the "New IP:"
field and press the Add button.
3) Restart the Proxy+ using Administrator/Restart WWW Admin page.
